PREFACE TO THE EIGHTH EDITION.

The fact that the following translation (first published in 1855) of
India's most celebrated drama has gone through seven editions, might
reasonably have absolved me from the duty of revising it.

Three years ago, however, I heard that Sir John Lubbock had thought
'[S']akoontala' worthy of a place among the hundred best books of the
world, and had adopted my version of the original. I therefore
undertook to go through every line and once again compare the
translation with the Sanskrit, in the hope that I might be able to
give a few finishing touches to a performance which, although it had
been before the public for about forty years, was certainly not
perfect. The act of revision was a labour of love, and I can honestly
say that I did my best to make my representation of Kalidasa's
immortal work as true and trustworthy as possible.

Klidsa (Devangar: servant of Kali) was a renowned Classical Sanskrit poet and dramatist, author of Meghadta, Abhijnashkuntala and Kumrasambhava , among other well-known works. His floruit cannot be dated with precision, but most likely falls within the Gupta period, probably in the 4th or 5th century.

James Oliver Curwood, (June 12, 1878 August 13, 1927), was an American novelist and conservationist. A great number of his works were turned into movies, several of which starred Nell Shipman as a brave and adventurous woman in the wilds of the north. Many films from Curwoods writings were made during his lifetime, as well as after his passing through to the 1950s. In 1988 French director Jean-Jacques Annaud used his 1916 novel, The Grizzly King to make the film The Bear. Annauds success generated a renewed interest in Curwoods stories that resulted in five more films being produced in 1994 and 1995.
